Ginkgo Biloba is often referred to as botany’s “living fossil”.  It is also one of the oldest species of trees that is presently still in existence.  Of all the herbal medicines that are scientifically studied, Ginkgo Biloba is at the top of the list.  The herb is processed from the leaves of the Ginkgo tree.

Ginkgo biloba has many uses such as improving memory loss, reduce depression, reduce symptoms of early stage Alzheimer’s disease, extremity circulation improvement, aids in long term stroke recovery, and reducing ringing in the ears (Tinnitus).

According to fossil records of the gingko tree it existed over 200 million years ago.  The gingko tree possesses a very strong ability to resist extreme temperatures, insects, and manmade pollution.  The Ice Age destroyed the gingko tree in many areas of the world.  However it did survive in Asia, specifically in China.  China cultivated it as a “sacred tree” by reason of it’s herbal medicine attributes.  It wasn’t until 1784 when the gingko tree made its way to America. Ginkgo Biloba extract has been one of the most researched herbal medicines since that time.  Ginkgo Biloba is probably the most frequently prescribed herbal medicines.

The extract Ginkgo Biloba improves the circulatory system which improves blood flow to the brain and central nervous system to include circulation of extremities.  A reduction of blood flow to the brain, central nervous system, and extremities can lead to a long list of medical problems.
Ginkgo biloba extract is a strong antioxidant that helps protect brain cells and cells of the nervous system.  This property of the Ginkgo Biloba is what is believed to help prevent age related diseases of the central nervous system.

Clinical studies of Ginkgo Biloba reveal that only about 1% of patients suffered with a mild stomach upset.  Some individuals with poor circulation, especially to the brain, may have a mild headache at the onset of Ginkgo Biloba use. This side effect usually is short lived.  Ginkgo Biloba’s interaction with other commonly prescribed medicines are not known of.
